What Electrical Vehicle Owners Should Know

Electrical Vehicle Maintenance Guide

No matter what model of electrical vehicle you drive, it is important to understand how to best maintain and care for your vehicle, so that you get the most out of it that you can. Here at Legend Motor Works, our technicians specialize in the maintenance and repair of all models of electric vehicles. We would love to be your trusted electrical vehicle repair shop in Colorado Springs! In today’s blog, we’ll be going over the most important maintenance your EV needs to prolong its life. While electrical motors have fewer moving parts than a traditional engine thus resulting in less maintenance, there are still parts of your EV that will need ongoing attention.

Caring for Your EV Battery

EV batteries require practically no maintenance, but there are tips you can implement to preserve the life of your battery. From being mindful of extreme temperatures to avoiding fast chargers, you can get additional years of battery life for your EV.

Avoid Extreme Temperatures for Your EV Battery

While the necessary heating and cooling systems are built into your vehicle to regulate the battery temperature, avoiding extreme temperatures aids in prolonging the lifespan of your battery. Many electric vehicle models have a built-in battery thermal management system. You can avoid extreme temperatures by parking in a garage, in the shade, and being sure to properly heat your vehicle before driving.

Don’t Use Fast Chargers All the Time

While convenient, fast chargers can affect overall battery life when used in excess. Fast chargers will produce extra heat, which as we discussed above can decrease battery life and performance. Home chargers are typically more gentle on your battery.

Avoid Depleting the Battery and Charging to 100%

Batteries degrade more quickly when drained to 0 or fully charged. Most manufacturers will design EVs to avoid full-capacity charging to prevent battery degradation. Charging to a level of 80-90% is recommended and not allowing your battery percentage to drop below 20% will aid in prolonging battery life.

Driving Habits for EV Battery Health

Additional ways you can preserve the life of your EV battery include accelerating smoothly, using regenerative braking, and limiting driving above top speeds.

Caring for Your EV Cooling System

For EVs that use coolant, it’s important to be aware of when that system may need flushed or recharged. Some models of EVs will recommend checking your coolant system every 6 months while others recommend checking the coolant system as a part of your car’s regular maintenance.

Caring for Your EV Brakes

Electric vehicles are similar to gas cars in that they rely on brake fluid to modulate their binders. But, there are hardware differences that result in EV’s braking system lasting longer than a gas car. Electrical vehicles have a motor that absorbs most of the everyday deceleration, and the friction brakes only take the wear of hard stops. On gas cars, every stop uses the friction brakes. The pads in your electric vehicle will last longer, but it’s important to be mindful of when your EV may need brake system maintenance.
